Porto Katsiki is often described as one of the
most picturesque places on Lefkas. It is situated in the far South West
of Lefkas island, approximately 30 minutes drive from Vassiliki when the
roads are quiet. Porto Katsiki has a beautiful beach with crystal clear
turquoise water. The beach is at the foot of soaring white limestone
cliffs and is accessed by about 80 steps.
| For many years a visit to Porto Katsiki involved
a somewhat arduous journey along an old pot-holed road, which at
times became a dirt track. However, the journey was worth the
effort. The viewpoint at the end of the 'Dragon's Head' was
reached along a short narrow path and set of steps, with 50
metre drops to the sea on either side - not for those who were
scared of heights! But the effort was worth it, with panoramic
views along the spectacular coastal cliffs to the North and
South and into the beautiful bay below. |

Today the journey to Porto Katsiki is much easier, with
an asphalt road all the way to the top of the steps which lead to the
beach, and up to the view point. The views from the Dragon's Head are
still superb and worth the visit.

Sadly, rather than preserving the natural beauty of this
idyllic place for future generations the government has allowed the
bulldozers to move in and destroy it. Large parts of the area have been
carved into dusty car parks, and the cliff edge is lined with caravans
(accompanied by loud, thumping diesel generators) selling drinks and
snacks.

The beach is still beautiful and worth a swim if you can
ignore the way the top of the cliffs has been destroyed.
