Nidri Waterfalls - Walk or
Cycle Ride |
|
Nidri Waterfalls are about 4 km from the
village. There are several ways of getting there, but if you are not
sure of the route the best place to start is from Nidri High
Street, opposite the big tree near Avis Car Hire.
Take the road inland that is signposted
'Rahi'. At every junction you follow the sign saying 'Waterfalls'.

Just follow the signs

When you are half way there you will
pass a little roadside taverna beside a bridge - a good place to stop for
'refreshments'! Eventually the road ends at a car park and a white
building covered in Grafitti on the left. On the right is usually a little
caravan cafe. From here it is another 10 minutes walk
up the valley, across the stepping stones, over the boulders and up the
steps. When you get to the waterfalls there is a freezing cold pond
underneath where you can go for a swim.

Most of this walk is on the flat along
country lanes, but the last part from the car park is not suitable for people
who have difficulty walking.

Agia Kiriaki Church (Geni,
Yeni) - Cycle Ride |
|
Agia Kiriaki Church is just across the
bay from Nidri - it could be reached by pedallo! It's a little too far
for walking (approx. 8 km) but it is a pleasant cycling route. The route
is easy...
Go south from Nidri along the main
road. Go through the next village of Vlicho. About 500 m after
Vlicho, take a left turn along a little road signposted 'Camping Site' and 'Dessimi
Bay'. Soon you will come to a fork in the road. Keep to the left
(not to the camp site). Carry on to the end of the road, where you will
see a metal gates saying 'No Entry'. This means you have gone too far!

Come back along the road a few hundred
metres and you will see a footpath on the sea side of the road. Leave
the bicycles here (locked) and walk along the path for ten minutes. You
will pass the tomb of Dorpfeld, the archaeologist, before you get to the
church. Go around to the back of the church and you will see a step
ladder built into the cliff face. Climb this ladder about four
metres and you will see a little cave in the rocks full of candles and icons.

Keen cyclists at Geni
Taverna |
Dessimi Bay |
|
Cycling back along the same road, you
will pass several tavernas where you can stop for a drink with beautiful views
beside Vlicho Bay. You will also pass a turning on your left which takes
you to the campsite at Desimi Bay - a steep climb over the headland but a nice
place to stop for a swim and beautiful views to Meganisi Island.
